Tip of the Week – Pattern Weights

Sewing tip of the week banner
Try using weights in place of pins when
cutting out your patterns.

I posted about these last year when I made them, but my set has been so useful that I thought they should be
included on this list. It’s definitely something I wish someone had introduced me to earlier!
Pattern weights are pretty much anything that you can use to weigh down your pattern so you don’t actually have to pin it to the fabric when cutting it out. (usually with a rotary cutter) They sell weighted bags specifically for this purpose, but I have seen people use pretty rocks, tile coastersrandom chunks of metal, piles of coins, cans of food, homemade bean bags filled with anything from rice to BB pelletsbutter knives, fishing sinkers, and even the obvious choice…paperweights. Mine are made from piles of extra large washers from the hardware store, but you can use anything you have around the house that is heavy enough to stay put while you’re cutting.

What do you prefer?

Weights? or Pins?

  1. I LOVE your weights!! I would SO do that IF I hadn't found that my ironing board has the perfect amount of holes in the metal beneath the cover & I just stick a straight pin all the way thru the pattern, fabric, cover, into the hole til only the head of the pin is showing! Then I cut away. Well, ONLY when I am cutting w/ scissors that is. I always forget to write washers on my shopping list so by the time I'm ready to cut out another pattern, BAM. NO WEIGHTS, again!!! Go ahead & chuckle Toni. Just you wait, you too will get "old" some day!! THEN it wont be so funny!!! JK – Thanks for the tip. I heart "TIP" day in my email box!!! 😉

    1. Are you kidding? I'd be the last person laughing. I have lists to remind me about other lists! A few more years and I probably won't even remember my own name!

    1. Ugh…Cutting the pattern out is my least favorite part of the sewing process. I secretly hope that my daughter will take an interest in sewing so I can eventually let her do that part! 😀

  2. I could use some of these. I use pins, but I think I'd be happier with some nice and pretty weights! Thank you for sharing! I’d love to have you visit our Pattern Party! Those with free patterns and templates are invited to link up from the 1st of the month to the 10th . See you soon!

    1. Thanks for the invite Chelsea! I'm actually working on a whole slew of new patterns right now. I'll have to see what I've got ready!
